Tooth Whitening - Frequently Asked Questions
Who may benefit from tooth whitening?
Patients, who may otherwise choose to crown or veneer teeth,
whitening is a great way to keep your own tooth shape. However,
treatment may not be as effective for some as it is for others.
The dentist will be able to determine whether or not you are
suitable for tooth whitening after completing a thorough oral
examination, including a shade assessment.
Do many people whiten their teeth?
More people than you imagine especially those in the public
eye. Take a closer look at the smiles of some TV celebrities.
A bright, sparkling smile can make a big difference for everyone.
Is whitening safe?
Extensive research and clinical studies show that whitening
teeth under dental supervision is safe. In fact dentists consider
tooth whitening to be the safest cosmetic dental procedure
available. Tooth whitening is not recommended for children
under 18 years old and pregnant or lactating women.
What happens if I swallow the gel?
The gel does not taste unpleasant, therefore accidentally
swallowing a little is not a problem.
What is the gel actually doing to my teeth?
The gel soaks into the tooth dentine and enamel. Stains that
have penetrated into the teeth over the years are removed
by changing coloured compounds into colourless ones using
an oxidation process.
Can I whiten my teeth while I am pregnant?
We do not recommend the use of this product whilst pregnant.
There is however no evidence to suggest that it would be a
problem.
Are the results permanent?
Yes and No. If your teeth are stained due to smoking, drinking,
etc then they will of course discolour over time should you
continue with these habits. For these users we recommend regular
maintenance.
